Scholarship Society Chairman Message 2016

Dear Alumni,

As Chair and President of the Scholarship Society for the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering thank you for all that you do to make BYU, and specifically the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, successful.

Your support over the years has had a major impact on the lives of young aspiring engineers and throughout the world as they have shared their skills and talents in many locales.

This year, we are in the midst of exciting developments at Brigham Young University. I had the opportunity to attend the groundbreaking for the new engineering building. This new structure will provide an enhanced learning experience for students and better prepare them to go throughout the world practicing their professions. It will also help BYU continue to attract the brightest and best.

Even in the midst of the fundraising efforts for the new building, your participation has allowed us to continue to support our students and important department activities. During the 2015-2016 year the Scholarship Society was able to assist students with scholarships totaling in excess of $105,000. In addition to the scholarships you helped 51 students participate in study abroad courses (10 to China, 23 to the Dominican Republic and 11 to the Netherlands and 7 to Italy). You also helped the students participate in the Rocky Mountain Conference, the AREMA Conference, and the ITE Western District Conference.

These things are made possible because we have many of you contributing and when there are many hands the work is light. We recognize that every situation is different, but we are continually grateful to have so many contributing at the levels they can. We see contributions from current students all the way to those who have finished their working careers, and everything in between. Thank you for your commitment and generosity.

This year’s Homecoming Game is on a Friday evening with a scheduled kickoff of 8:15 p.m. MDT. That will give us the opportunity to gather that evening like we have in the past, but this will be more like a “tailgating party” at the Clyde Bldg. It should be a very fun event.

Here are details on some of the activities planned for Homecoming Weekend 2016:

On Friday evening October 14 we will have our Annual Alumni BBQ. This is a great opportunity to bring your family and come and enjoy good food and great friends, right there in the building where we all spent so much time learning. While we will always accept donations to the Scholarship Society, we want this to be primarily a gathering and opportunity to socialize. We hope you will add this event to your plans. Details are below:

CEEn 2016 Annual Alumni BBQ/Tailgating Party

Date: Fri. Oct. 14th

Time: 5:30-7:00 p.m. Socialize & Dinner

Place: BYU Clyde Step-Down Lounge, Provo, UT

To RSVP please contact the CE Department civil@byu.edu

After the barbeque, make your way to LaVell Edwards Stadium for the game. Remember no one knows how to party like civil engineers.

The fun and opportunities to spend time with friends and family does not end there. The following morning we will have our Annual Alumni Golf Tournament. This is a great way to enjoy the fall weather and the beauty of the area. The following information will help you get signed up:

CEEn 2016 Annual Alumni Golf Tournament

Time: 8:30 a.m.

Place: Sleepy Ridge Golf Course

We have been very pleased with the work of so many in assisting our students. In addition to the scholarships we have seen the impact that mentoring and assisting students as they prepare for their careers can have. There are opportunities for us to get involved at whatever level works for us. It has been a gratifying opportunity for me. We encourage you to remain involved or get involved if you have not been in the past.

In addition to the individual donations to the Scholarship Society this year we are making available sponsorships for the annual barbeque as well as the golf tournament. The sponsorships offset the costs of these activities and increase the amount available for scholarships and support of the students and the department. If you or your organization would like to help with sponsoring these events please contact Jolene Johnson at jolene_johnson@byu.edu.

We look forward to seeing you for homecoming and hope you will come and socialize with us at the barbeque and the golf tournament.
