Dr. Nelson Conducted a training seminar in Bogota Colombia for the UN GEO program in Latin America. He has been creating open source tools for water information management and sharing and teaching organizations throughout Latin American.
For the second year in a row he has participated in a summer institute for early graduate students at the new National Water Center that is run under the direction of the National Weather Service but seeks to integrate all federal government agencies dealing with water such as the USGS, Army Corps, and FEMA. There were two students who participated in the seven-week institute developing visualization and data integration tools for a new National Water Model. This model, still in its infancy, connects the atmospheric weather forecasts to the land surface and will allow us to see what is happening in the nations rivers with respect to stream flow and flooding in the same way we now commonly view rainfall patterns through radar images. Dr. Schultz had a very productive summer with travel to several countries. He first traveled to Berlin Germany to attend the International Symposium on Enhancing Highway Performance. He presented his research on “An Analysis of Express Lanes in Utah” at the Conference. From Germany he traveled to Delft, Netherlands; Paris, France; Rome, Italy; Munich, Germany; and London, England on a scoping trip related to a future Study Abroad course in Europe and evaluating international collaboration opportunities. Dr. Schultz then traveled to Pretoria, South Africa where he was the Keynote speaker at the 3rd International Conference on Access Management and presented safety related research from access management implementations in Utah.
Dr. Jones took a group of seven students to Italy as part of a new geotechnical engineering study abroad course called “Ancient and Modern Geotechnical Engineering.” They visited sites in Venice, the Italian alps, Bologna, Pisa, Florence, Rome, and Pompeii.
Mirabello, Italy - Conducted blast liquefaction tests to evaluate downdrag on a micropile with researchers from the Italian National Institute for Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) in Rome. Also gave 3 hour seminar at the Univ. of Florence on piles in liquefied sand.
Cephalonia Island, Greece - Conducted Dynamic Cone Penetration Tests to quantify liquefaction potential of gravels at two ports where gravelly soils liquefied during a recent earthquake.
Kyoto, Japan - Gave invited presentation on downdrag of piles in liquefied sand as part of international seminar at the Univ. of Kyoto.
Minneapolis Minnesota - Presented research results on Skewed bridge abutment passive force and Lateral resistance of piles near MSE wall faces to two AASHTO technical committees for possible inclusion in new bridge codes.
Chattanooga, Tennesee- ADSC Professor Seminar on Drilled Foundations - Gave presentation on seismic issues relative to drilled shaft foundations to group of 40 professors from around the country.
Memphis, Tennessee - Conducted blast liquefaction tests on drilled shafts and driven piles with Prof. Rick Coffman at the Univ. of Arkansas.
Reno, Nevada - Gave presentation on Skewed Bridge Abutment Passive Force Behavior at US-Chile Seismic Bridge Design Workshop.
Brisbane, Australia - Gave presentations on Dynamic Cone Penetration Testing for liquefaction evaluation in gravel and Dilatometer Testing (DMT) for liquefaction evaluation at 5th Intl. Conf. on Site Characterization.
