This past week, the Ira A. Fulton College of Engineering and Technology hosted its second annual Three Minute Thesis Competition. The top two students from engineering and technology will now go on to compete in the university-wide competition hosted by BYU.
The Three Minute Thesis research presentation is a competition where students present a bare-bones thesis in three minutes or less. Presenting students must focus on the absolute essentials of their thesis and are only permitted to use an individual PowerPoint slide to aide their presentation.
The winners and prizes from the Ira A. Fulton College of Engineering and Technology were as follows:
1st prize: $500 to Rydge Mulford, mechanical engineering, using origami to control radiative heat transfer.
2nd prize: $250 to Jennifer Craft, civil and environmental engineering, reducing drifts in BRBF buildings.
3rd prize: $250 to Rebecca Madsen, manufacturing engineering technology, friction bit joining
A crowd favorite prize of $100 was awarded to Herman Dolder for his presentation of using pre-computed scenarios in flood forecasting.
The top two students will continue on to present their theses and compete against other participating colleges at BYU on March 5.
The Three Minute Thesis research presentation competition originated in at the University of Queensland in Australia in 2008 and has since spread to universities across the globe. Additional information regarding the Three Minute Thesis competition can be found on their website.
