Chair Message 2013

Dear Alumni,

As Chair and President of the Scholarship Society for the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Brigham Young University I would like to thank you for your past support and encourage you to join us in providing funds for scholarships to students that are the future of our profession.  We attract high quality students, and providing scholarships to as many as possible allows us to both retain those who have entered our program and attract top students in the future.

I have the opportunity to work with and hire students from a number of fine universities with excellent programs.  None are better prepared to serve the public and contribute to society than those that we hire from BYU.  The breadth and depth of their experiences and the maturity they show in the workplace, along with the ability to relate to and communicate with clients and the public is unsurpassed.

There are of course a number of factors that contribute to the quality that these students demonstrate including a background in the gospel, and in many instances prior missionary service.  Those advantages notwithstanding, the experiences they have going through the department curriculum where they get both top notch classroom instruction and real world application, places them in a unique set of job candidates and readies them for future leadership responsibilities.

Please contribute generously to this effort.  If we all contribute and give back a little, the cumulative effect is substantial.  If you are local or plan on returning to campus for Homecoming please join us at the annual barbeque dinner on Friday, October 11, 2013 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Crabtree Lounge.  We ask that you RSVP at the following link by October 4, 2013.

This is a fundraiser and we ask that you join us for an evening of good food and renewal of friendships while donating to the Scholarship Society.  This is our primary fundraiser for the year and we hope you will join us.

We recognize that many of you have settled in various locations throughout the world and are doing great things both in engineering and in spreading the gospel.  Many of you will not be able to join us, but knowing that you desire to contribute and give back to the institution that has given us all so much we have set up a way for you to contribute from wherever you are.  Contributions can be made anytime at .  We encourage you to donate between now and the evening of our barbeque as this allows us to plan for the coming year and know what we have available for scholarships and support of important programs.

We hope to increase significantly the number of alumni contributing.  Your assistance in this important endeavor is appreciated.  I hope to see many of you on October 11 and if not, hear from you as you let us know what we can do to continue to improve what we do in support of the department.

Best Regards,

Lee Cammack

Scholarship Society Chair and President
