Grading Policy – Winter 2010


Read the following information and maintain your grade record on blackboard.
You are responsible for the accuracy of the Blackboard grade record. You will
be able to update it at any time during the semester until the deadline (April
21, 2010)
through completing quizzes.

ATTENDANCE: 14 Points Possible

Attendance
(14 Points – Must complete Attendance Quizzes to receive credit):
You receive one point for each CE department seminar and college
lecture series you attend. You can access the attendance quizzes in the “Attendance
Quizzes
” category on Blackboard. Complete these one question quizzes to
receive credit for attending seminar/college lecture each week. These attendance
quizzes will not be available until you complete the Safety Training quiz (instructions
listed below). Please be present on time and remain seated until the
end
of all seminar/college programs, after appropriate appreciation has
been expressed to guest speakers. Our guest presenters deserve this courtesy.

ASSIGNMENTS:
9 Points Possible

Safety Training
(Must complete Safety Training Quiz to have access to Attendance Quizzes)
: You are required to complete the Basic Emergency Safety
Training, Fire Extinguisher Training, and Electrical Safety Training once
a year as a seminar assignment. This assignment must be completed by January
15, 2010
.  These three safety trainings are found on Blackboard under
the CEEn Safety category. To verify that you have completed the training, you
must pass the quizzes that accompany each training (also located under the CEEn
Safety category on Blackboard).  To pass the Quiz you must get 9 out
of 10 questions right.  You may retake the quizzes as many times as needed
to get the required 9 out of 10.  Once you have completed the three safety
trainings and their accompanying quizzes, complete the CEEn Safety Training
quiz found under the “Assignments” category on Blackboard.  This
quiz is simply to report you have completed and passed the Safety Training quizzes. Be
aware that each training takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes to complete. If

. If
you have completed the safety training within the past year, all you need to
do is complete the CEEn Safety Training quiz found under the “Assignments
category on Blackboard by January 15, 2010.  Until you complete
this Safety Training quiz, you will not have access to any of the attendance
quizzes
.

Seminar Notebook
(3 Points – Must turn in
notebook during class or to CE office to receive credit):
You are required to record notes during each seminar/college lecture
in a composition notebook that is due in class on the last seminar of the semester
April 8, 2010. For students in 400B section 2, this notebook is due
by April 21, 2010 and should be turned into the CE secretaries. Once
your notebook is graded, you will pick it up from the CE office to reuse for
note taking in all your future seminars. You will then use these notes to assist
you in writing papers during your Senior Seminar (400C). If you would like to
know more about the 400C paper requirements in order to better tailor your seminar
notes, refer to the 400C Grading Policy on the CE webpage.

ASCE Service/Activities
(5 Points – Must complete Service/Activity Quizzes to receive credit):
You must spend
a minimum of five hours to complete these points. Three of the five points must
be from an ASCE sponsored service project. The other two can either be from
an ASCE sponsored service project or activity/field trip. Chapter service and
activity points are awarded on the following basis. One point is given
for each hour you spend working on an ASCE service project. Only time
spent working on service projects sponsored by the ASCE student chapter qualify
for these points
. One point is given for each non-service
ASCE activity/field trip
you attend (not for each hour you spend at the
activity). Record your points on Blackboard by completing a quiz in the “Service/Activity
Point Quizzes
” category after each hour of service you give or activity
you attend. These service/activity quizzes must be completed before April
21, 2010
.

**Note: You will only
be able to record your participation in service projects and activities that
are approved ASCE service projects and activities. To see what service projects/activities
will qualify for these points, refer to the Weekly Announcements for
items labeled Service or Activity Points under the
Weekly
Announcements
category
on Blackboard. Service projects and activities will be added periodically throughout
the semester as they are announced. If you find that a service project or activity
has been announced, but is not specified in the weekly announcements, contact
an ASCE officer to verify that they have notified the CE secretaries of it existence.

Activity Report
(1 point- Must complete Activity Report Quiz on Blackboard to receive credit):
You are required to provide
one written report of a service, activity, or field trip you attended. This
report needs to be no longer than one half page, typed, single spaced, 12pt
font, and must include the name, date, and location of the activity, a brief
description of what was done, the number of people in attendance, and your overall
impressions of the activity. These must be submitted via email to byuasce [at] gmail [dot] com
">byuasce [at] gmail [dot] com.



Record your points on Blackboard by completing a quiz in the "Assignments"
category after your paper has been submitted.  This activity report quiz
must be completed before April 21, 2010.

MAKE-UP ATTENDANCE:
2 Make-Up Points Possible

Make-Up Attendance
(2 Make-Up Points – Must e-mail civil [at] et [dot] byu [dot] edu to receive credit):
If you miss up to two
department seminars or college lectures, you may make this up by earning extra
service and/or activity points. A maximum of two make-up points may be earned.
You may earn these points by:

A.   Attending an ASCE
Central Utah Branch
meeting. (1 point per meeting)

B.   Attending ASCE student chapter
activities including field trips, socials, etc. (1 point per activity)

C.   
Working extra hours on chapter service projects. (1 point per hour of service
performed)

Record these make-up points by sending an e-mail to civil [at] et [dot] byu [dot] edu">civil [at] et [dot] byu [dot] edu with the subject line: Seminar
Make-Up. You must include the following information in your e-mail: Name, BYU
ID Number, Course (CEEn 400B), Date of Absence, and how you made up the point.
The CE secretaries will then enter in a point(s) for the day(s) you have missed.

GRADING:

Keep track of the points you earn by completing the above mentioned
quizzes on Blackboard (Safety Training, Attendance, and Service/Activity). You
are responsible to guarantee the accuracy of your Blackboard grade record. The
last day you will be able to make modifications to your Blackboard grade record
is April 21, 2010. If you must make changes after the deadline, you will
need to see the CE secretaries and your grade will drop half a letter.

You will receive
the following grade for the respective amount of points listed below:

A = 23, A- = 22, B+
= 21, B = 20, B- = 19, C+ = 18, C = 17, C- = 16, D+ = 15, D =
14, D- = 13, E = <13
